Leftover wedding cake!

Went to the post office just minutes ago to ship off the 120 luscious little leftovers to New Zealand for our exhibition at Wharepuke Gallery. While I was filling out the paperwork the postman asked me if I would mind if he used some leftover sixty four cent stamps to cover the postage. "Sure, why not," I replied. "What have you got?" Imagine my surprise when he took out a stack of stamps with wedding cakes on them. So, New Zealand, that package with 45 little leftover wedding cake stamps plastered all over is really, most sincerely sent with love from US to you!

One of the things we like to do at Wingtip is offer Workshops. In fact, since we opened, we've had nearly a g'zillion workshops. And what I like about 'em the most is we somehow manage to get the best and the brightest to do the teaching. I posted a new one today on facebook and then I got to thinking. Why in the heck would we call them a workshop? I mean really, when you're doing what you love, it's not work! It's FUN, it's PLAY.

So I need your help.

Should we call them Funshops?
Should we call them Playshops?
Should we call them "Laughingyouryouknowwhatoffandmakingcoolstuffshops?

At any rate, why not all of the above! And if any of you Leftover Lovin' printmaking types ever want to offer a Funshop, or a reasonable facsimile at Wingtip, we'll put the light on for you! Now what could be cooler than that?

What a Swell Day

Before Leftovers, this time of year used to be the worst for me. Winter getting old, waiting for spring. And in Idaho, we have these things called inversions. Think of the cartoon character with a string attached to a heavy gray cloud. That's an inversion. Cold, colorless days. And they can last forever if the weather is right. But since Leftovers, I barely notice. You see your prints start arriving just about the time I start getting really sick of winter. And lately they've started coming every day. Yesterday I got my first ever package from New Zealand - and Missouri!

Today was a bright sunny day. The afternoon was almost balmy. And besides the thrill of looking forward to getting another fresh package of Leftovers in the mail, I had the pleasure of meeting my friend, first time Leftover participant and your table companion, for coffee this morning. And I received her extraordinary prints in person.

Then after teaching printmaking to a great group of 6th graders (we made collagraphs), I had a date with two printmakers at Wingtip where they printed their Leftovers. It was a picture perfect printmaking day!

I haven't been ignoring you. So I have a little treat. MMMM, hmmm!

I'm going to show you one of the Leftovers that arrived in the mail the other day. No, I'm not going to spill the beans, just let you share the same awe I felt when I opened the envelope from your table companion from Arizona!

Whaddyathink? Nice surprise, huh? And you oughtta see the prints inside.

Now, for another little tidbit. You likely know that I'm shipping off the Leftovers II this week to Wharepuke Gallery in Kerikeri, New Zealand. But, what you didn't know is we've decided to make this a regular affair! Yes, that means that Leftovers III will be traveling to NZ, too!
Now, if any of you have any other ideas of where we can take this feast, fill me in! Oh, the places we'll go!

Earl Silas Tupper

Uh-huh. That was a photo of Earl Silas Tupper in my last post. He's the genius that developed Tupperware and in 1951 began marketing it through home parties. I'm old enough to remember a little jingle about "my tupperware lady . . . dadadadah daht da!"

And, according to my google search:

Today, a Tupperware demonstration begins approximately every two seconds some place in the world with yearly net sales exceeding $1.2 billion!!!!"

Now, THAT is a lotta Leftovers!

And speaking of a lotta leftovers, we're up to 157 Leftovers III participants so far, and, I've got to admit, it's beginning to feel like a bit of a balancing act . . .

But, just think of the magnificent smorgasbord ahead! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Well, I'll give you a clue! He made one of the greatest contributions to leftovers the free world has ever seen! In fact, on Super Bowl Sunday, when the last of the fans turn off the tube and scrape their leftover guacamole, salsa, artichoke dip and hummus into his invention (and burp the lids) they'll silently acknowledge this leftover genius!

Of course, at Wingtip Press, we're totally ignoring Super Bowl Sunday. Yup, we've decided to celebrate the clash of paper and ink by hosting Super Print Sunday. And on Monday evening, when all the sports fans have left is some leftover guac and the sports page, we'll have a handful of handprinted Valentines.

There is a danger when I post this, because I will be receiving requests that I include her print in your assortment. And, as you can imagine with so many prints, that would be impossible to execute, so I will let you just drool over her sweet little print!

32 drops in an empty bottle

Do try this at home. Or do it at a wine bar and become the star of the bar. So you've served the last glass of wine and the bottle is empty. Or so you think! Because, my friend, there are always 32 drops in an empty bottle. Don't believe me? Try it. Believe it or not, they will flow quite fast at first - so pour slowly enough to count them. And then just keep that bottle tilted and, lo and behold, "voila" - yup, 32 drops in an empty bottle. You see, whether you knew it or not - you'll always have leftovers.

Just a little white lie

So, here it is weeks later and I still haven't given you that sneak peak of the luscious Leftovers that have been arriving on a regular basis. I know. It's all my fault. I could tell you a little white lie and say something like "oops, my scanner is down" or "where the heck is the USB cord for the printer to download these scans?" or I could tell you the truth, which is I told Siri (my new best friend on my iphone - a gift from my daughter) to do it for me, and she misunderstood. It could happen. Like this past week-end. I sent a text to my son, Tim, inviting him to dinner. He sent a text back (NOTE: I didn't say I "texted" and he "texted" because for GOD'S SAKE THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS TEXTED!)

Here's what happened:

Me: Wanna come to dinner? Making yummy pot roast and mashed potatoes . . .
Tim: Not tonite, mom. Thnx
Me: Are you sure? It will be delish
Spell check correction: It will be selfish
Me: Oops, it will be Delish
Spell check correction: It will be shellfish

Obviously, SOMEONE has been putting words in my mouth.

Fear Factor

The fear factor seems to be a great motivator. Well, at least in the political arena these days, and especially when times are tough. I found this old WWII poster and thought I'd doctor it up a little for the giggles. You know, something to get the ball rolling with the dinner guests.

Though those WWII posters actually made a lot of sense - you know, encouraging people to be more resourceful, not wasteful. Makes sense to me.

Stumbled across this old ad and had to shake my head at how gullible consumers can be. Fortified donuts, huh? With a minimum of 25 units of Vitamin B1. Uh-huh. Betcha there were no leftover donuts in those households.

Well, we here at Wingtip are hoping everyone has the benefit of having leftovers - whether they're donuts or dolmas, drumsticks or dumplin's!

And we're hoping you'll be creating some fine fortified prints for the Leftovers III exchange.

It's official! The Leftover II prints are hanging at Boise's Sockeye Grill for our first ever Leftovers Silent Auction. And the proceeds are going to the Idaho Hunger Relief Task Force.

The bids are coming in and will close on Monday, December 5 at 6:00 PM. If you're in the area, you can stop by for a pint, bid on a print and know that somebody, somewhere in Idaho, will have the benefit of the Hunger Relief Task Force working on their behalf. Now, isn't that what it's all about? Making room at the table for everyone. Wingtip thinks so. And we're so proud we have all of your lovely leftovers to share and make a difference.

I know! Last year, when I invited all you Leftover participants to make 14 prints, I said the 14th print of your edition would be used to raise funds for folks who don't have the benefit of wondering what to do with leftovers. And I really, and truly, thought that by early November 2011 I would be able to say that funds raised from the sale of the prints would be in the hands of the folks that make sure that happens.

To be honest, I also thought that Wingtip Press would be in a commercial space by now and we would have hosted this event. But that just wasn't meant to be. HOWEVER, the GOOD news is, we found a venue that is very excited to be our host for this event. So stand by as the gay-la-la is unfolding as I write: We're planning a silent auction at THEE local brew pub! They serve up great food, great fun and stellar brews - and they LOVE art!! So we'll be raising funds to do the best we can to make a difference and spread the Leftover Love.

The Holman Kornfest

"Where," Dwight asked, "is the Holman Kornfest?"

"Funny, you should ask," Gretchen said, as she carefully arranged the assortment of leftovers for the upcoming banquet.

"Does it have anything to do with the Beer, Wine or Cheese Festival? Or Dairy Days? Yes, that's it, Dairy Days! I remember having creamed corn when I was a kid," Dwight recollected.

"Oh!" Gretchen smiled, her lips forming an upturned crescent moon, her eyes slowly closing as she luxuriated in her recollection of the simple pleasure of the delicious burst of freshly shucked corn and rich, warm, sweet cream butter. "The HOLMAN KORNFest! It's all coming back! And who could forget Weinerfest and Cranberry Fest and, OMG, the Sparta Butterfest?" she exclaimed. "What I wouldn't give to be back in LaCrosse, Wisconsin."

Well, to tell the truth, I don't know if Dwight or Gretchen will make it back, but our Leftovers are going to take their rightful place in the land of Kornfest, Weinerfest, Cranberry Fest, Butterfest and Cheese, Beer and Wine Fest at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. In fact, we'll be packing up this magnificent moveable feast in the next few days to send them on their way.

I'm afraid not every entry title is fully capitalized, there are extra spaces between some of the images, or I've listed print sizes inaccurately or worst of all, misspelled a name! As I post them, I find the original and then marvel at how wonderful they are. And then I tend to get distracted again, enjoying the print like I did when I first opened it when it arrived at Wingtip. And you can see why I get distracted, right? They are extraordinary little Leftovers, every one of them!

Wingitp had a little soiree last night for the locavores. So, we spread out the exhibition set on the presses and the inking stations for a little potluck for those Boise folks that didn't make it to the Rocky Mountain Printmaking Alliance Symposium last week.

Here's a sneak peak of the studio buffet!

I just put them back in the carton I used to package them for the Symposium and am looking for a venue to show them before they head to the University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse in August. Then there will be some time before the end of 2011 before they head to New Zealand for an exhibition in March, 2012.

I'll be sorting Leftovers in Wingtip's new studio/workshop space!

If you look closely you can see it comes with a broom for sweeping up Leftover crumbs.
I'm very excited about the possibilities. And trying to figure out if all the presses, flatfiles, drying racks and printmaking paraphernalia will fit. I'm staying up late imagining the workshops, print exhibitions, studio time . . . on and on. A dream is to offer a printmaking residency. Now wouldn't that be cool?

On April 26, 27, and 28, 2011, RMPA will be hosting it’s inaugural symposium in Boise. Activities will be held on Boise State University’s campus and throughout Boise,Idaho. These will include lectures, mixers, and large scale relief printing with a steam roller.

And it tells a story. And it helps us connect - connect with one another, connect with who we are, connect with where we are and it helps us see how we are part of a much larger picture somehow.

Plan on spending a few minutes here, and sit down for awhile, because I have a wonderful little story to share.

When I was organizing Leftovers II last fall I sent out a lot of emails inviting people to participate. Most of you are probably familiar with that evite. Here's a response I received from a former classmate and printmaker:

I would love to participate in your print exchange. I have a slight logistical issue, but am hoping, with a little help, to contribute to the exchange. I am currently deployed to Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan. Which means I am currently separated from my scraps and printing supplies, but close to interesting artistic inspiration to print. I won't be back in Boise until the 1st week of April. If you could direct me to some resources for scrap paper, and an easy, portable, printing technique I could have shipped over here, I would love to participate. Thank you for thinking of me and I look forward to having fun in person with Wing Tip when I get back.

Wow, I had no idea he was in Afghanistan! So, this was my response:

Well . . . Geez! I didn't know you are in Afghanistan! Yowsers!

So! How about I send you some scraps, some linoleum and a brayer and ink! I could send a small set of lino tools, too! You could hand burnish the prints. I am thrilled that you are interested in participating and will do whatever I can to get you the stuff. Let me know if there would be any problem with sending the tools. I have plenty of supplies - and what would be better than to send all the leftover stuff to you to use while you are there!

I sent the stuff. He got the stuff. He replied.

I received your package recently and it really made my day. I am excited to put a run together, the best I can over here. Little things from home become a big deal over here. I'll keep you updated on my progress. Again thank you very much.

And then - tonight - I got this:

I mailed my "scrap-run" to your address on Sunday (Saturday night your
time). This will arrive later than the 15th, hopefully not too much
later. It's not the easiest thing to mail things over here, most
especially the line of people at the post office. I did get to use the
"express line" which only took 2 hours. I'm attaching some in-process
photos. I did have a great time doing it, so thank you very much for
allowing me this opportunity. Let me know if there is anything else I
need to do.

Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down

Yesterday two of my printmaking pals, Linda and Deb, came over to play in the studio. It was an ugly, bitter day. To steal a line from one of my favorite children's holiday books, "it was as cold and bitter as a quarrel." So, I decided to make tomato soup and toasted cheese sandwiches to take the chill off. We had leftovers for dessert. No . . . not just any leftovers. Yeah, I did it. I gave them both a sneak peak at the pouches of prints that have passed the threshold into my kiwi green Leftover tote. Oh, if you could've heard the oohs and aahs. It was a beautiful thing.

Here's the tote - just so you can get a visual. You can kinda get a little peek at the edge of one of the prints if you zoom in. And you're absolutely right. There is no way this will hold 135 pouches of prints. Oh, didn't I tell you - we're still growing. And you can cross Maine off the list of US states void of printmakers and leftovers. Uh-huh.

Last year we had Leftovers from the US and Scotland. This year, we've added several provinces of Canada, and places as far away as Singapore, Afghanistan, Spain, the UK, Wales, Ireland, Puerto Rico and Tasmania. How cool is that? Looks like it's going to be an International Buffet!

When all the packages of leftovers have stuffed my mailbox, there will be a few states that won't be represented. Seriously! Using the latest Leftover List, there is legitimate reason to believe there are no leftovers in the following states:

Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Can you imagine what this map (courtesy of the NY Times) would look like without all those states? Sorry Alaska and Hawaii. And can you imagine our luscious Leftover buffet with all 50 U.S. states? There's definitely more room at the Leftover Table. Nudge a printmaking pal in one of those under respresented states, and tell 'em to get crackin!

A Leftover Landslide

Yup! Got a tip that there's a bundle of bloggers from Canada to Spain spreading the leftover light and love. Check 'em out! You'll even get a "shining" sneak peak at one set of prints that arrived in my mail box recently.

And speaking of mail, I can't tell you how much fun it is to find a package of prints in my mailbox! Though this mailbox has taken a lot of abuse. My postal carrier stuffed in a big package of prints last year forcing the mail box to lose it's footing in the ground and it's been a bit wobbly ever since. With 130 packages arriving over the next few weeks, (let's see that's about FOUR a day) it just may be on its last leg.

See the large envelope with the red stripe on top. If you could only peak inside . . . absolutely stunning little drypoints! Uh-huh.

Hmmm, what is "good press?" Well, I suppose this could be considered a good press. Good enough to sit alongside a canal in Wales to be photographed by a tourist on a longboat last July. To be honest, I was holding my breath when I suggested that I wanted to exceed 100 participants in this leftover potluck! But we did it - and there's still room for more and there's still time! Especially if you're as prolific as your fellow printmakers from Connecticut and North Carolina whose prints have already arrived at Wingtip and are creating quite a stir among the Wingtip crowd.

By the way, that's me in the black, eavesdropping on a call. Okay, that's a fib - but it could've been. And, let's face it - the hair isn't right to be the 70's! But I did actually work on a switchboard in the early 70's during my summer breaks. Honest . . .

Just what exactly is a leftover?

As our exchange continues to grow (from Afghanistan to Australia and places in between) I realize I haven't been specific enough for some of you deep thinkers out there!

Last year when I found all those scraps of leftover Stonehenge, Rives, Lana, etc, I envisioned each of you digging in your drawers for similar scraps, tearing them to a common size and creating a small edition of prints inspired by the word "leftovers." Well, some of our participants were much more conceptual than that and actually found some fabulous leftover prints, tore them down to a common size and then added a common element to create a varied edition.

During the wars - WWI and WWII - the US Food Administration had an ongoing campaign to remind people to save food. Talk about recycling! This was a time when it was patriotic to reduce, reuse and recycle. We had a common goal.

I realized that when I alphabetized the list earlier tonight. And since we're all printmakers, I thought I might remind you of what is believed to be the origin of this phrase. Mirror images - need I say more? Typographer apprentices were cautioned to mind their p's and q's when setting type because they are mirror images and easy to confuse. Now, I always thought it had to do with the keyboard. Left little finger types the q and right little finger types the p.

I'm not a pessimist! I'm a Leftover Optimist and we're shooting for 100 leftover lovers the second time around. We're already 1/5 of the way there! Not bad since it's been only two days since we announced LEFTOVERS II.

Leftover Mashed Potatoes

I always make a huge pile of mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving day. It's really my favorite leftover. In our family we turn them into mashed potato patties. Add a little egg, maybe some curry, green onion tops, cheese, some bacon bits, your heart's desire . . . then dust with flour and saute in butter until golden brown. Vincent captured my peasant ancestors enjoying this simple pleasure years ago.

Okay, that's a fib. The part about Vincent capturing my ancestors consuming leftover potatoes, that is.

The truth is, however, it's beginning to look a lot like LEFTOVER SEASON. And I'll be announcing our second annual LEFTOVER print exchange very soon. Bon appetit!

Doggie Bags

How do you store your Leftovers?

A) Do you slide a big plastic bag over the serving plate?
B) Do you get out that Tupperware trio and burp those lids?
Or,
C) Do you find, like I do, that a zip lock bag is the perfect and practical way to preserve them?

If you chose C, then you'll understand why Wingtip chose to present them in their natural state!

Oh, I forgot to mention that the Solar exchange is hanging with Leftovers! Solar, by the way, is an exchange of 16 artists from Wingtip Press and Oxbow Press. The theme is the result of a Solarplate workshop at Wingtip Press last August. Candace Nicol came to Boise to teach the process and the exchange features the Solarplate process and was aptly named Solar - and it was due on the Winter Solstice.

Closing Night at Oxbow Press

Last week-end a few Boize-wahzians made the trek to Reno for the closing reception of Leftovers. We oohed and ahhed at the fabulous space that is filled with the energy of Oxbow Press and its members. And then we packed up the luscious Leftovers to bring 'em home.

And those still fresh and fabulous Leftovers are now adorning the walls of the tasting room at Woodriver Cellars in Eagle, thanks to the help of leftover lovin' local printmakers Odessa, Maria Carmen, Lisa and Sue.

Here's a small peek of Oxbow minutes before the Leftovers came down.

Ever wonder what wine to serve with Leftovers? Come join us at Woodriver Cellars in Eagle, Idaho for the month of August! We'll be having a meet the artists night on Friday, August 13 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. And there will be live music, too!

These leftovers have been busy. I haven't seen them since they left Wingtip Press in April!
